Three Poems by Bobbi Sinha-Morey: "The Golden Light", "In the Quiet Hours", and

The Golden Light

I hold the day in my hands,

a captive in the golden light

while all around me an autumn

sky shakes itself loose; a drift

of last summer's dust in this

cool season; and I've always

come here, a sanctuary by

the river to observe the heavens

and open my booklet of calming

psalms, let the wind turn one of

its leaves with its thumb. Not

too far above me a mother wren

has left its nest of moss and

thistledown with her young

to wet their wings in the water;

each one of them and the idyllic

world I'm in all part of the globe

I live inside curved by God's

In the Quiet Hours

I opened my paperback,

the smell of wild ginger

lifted from its pages while

I sit alone lost in a faraway

world in the morning light

of my garden, evergreens

all around me, the blue skin

of a spring sky pierced by

the swirling slate of dawn;

quiet hours when birds have

not yet reached the fountain.

I long to gather homegrown

tomatoes later on in the day,

and lemons so plump they

heavily fit in my palm.

My arms are warmed by

the soft fingers of heaven,

and I stay filling my basket

until dusk has come.

The Ways of Wood

In the night air when

the sweet scent of pine

rises I lie down and

dream of a dark forest

with ferns and fossils

in hummus; and when

I wake, the sun is in my

window spilling a path

to my pillow. I remember

hickory chips flying like

sparks, kindling a fire in

the hearth of my home;

my hands finding the ways

of wood -- chopping walnut,

wild cherry, and bird's-eye

maple, sending a prayer at

the end of the day, of life

inside my cabin and in

the hills, every word

warmed inside my heart

before reaching heaven.
