Two Poems by JD DeHart: "Visiting Again", and "Prerogatives"

April 16, 2017

Visiting Again

I don't care anymore

about the rejection of ten

years ago.

I'm revisiting some of those

voices who spoke to me,

listening to the words again.

You say you love me.

How can that be?  I don't

even love myself.

Maybe if I say it over and over

again I will believe it.

Help me believe it.

I say I trust you, but we both

know that trust is not

complete.  I mean, just look

at how my hands are still

clutching whatever I can.

Amazingly, you tell me

that's okay.  These are all

steps on the way.

Pieces of a larger process

I haven't glimpsed yet.

Prerogatives

We don't get to measure

out the grace and mercy

that is given to others.

Reminders of parables

come up here.  A vineyard,

and the owner gets to pay

everyone as he pleases.

But how can generosity

slip past us?  We want to

strain at it.

How can this person or

that person get in?  Would

we know a believer

in a line up in front of us?

What if we listened to their

conversation a while?

What does it mean, how

can we tell, that heaven

has mingled with earth

in our lives?

We scatter a bit of heaven

everywhere we go, choosing

not to cast judgment,

bitterness, and argument

where we step.
